LIST
Task
By understanding the significance of the graphics in its cultural studies,
philosophy, sociology and origin history. We will simplify all this
through the
breakdown and expansion though
design system.
- Research
Our module lecturers - Ms Anis and Mr. Asrizal has invited Mr. Vinod to
give a talk on the topic - School 'Badges'. Besides, we also have proposal
consultation after the seminar. The feedback is recorded here.

Task
Lectures
Week 1
Class Summary
- Brief of MIB and Module Structure
- Lecture on Visual Culture
- Dividing into groups to discuss on the theme assigned
- After class, brainstorming the culture to be proposed.
- Various ideas are provided from members and we listed down the possibility and obstacles that we might faced for that particular idea in Google Docs, thus members can contribute and updated the information.
Visual Culture
Culture, Design & Research
- Culture and design are inseparable, and as future designers, you need to be able to understand and express both as part of your creative skills development.
- Design
Breakdown and Expansion though Design System
- Research is important to unite theory and practises of design to establish our project rationale.
- There are 3 steps of doing research:
- Do research before writing the proposal
- Secondary Findings - Data collected through published and existing resources, such as Wikipedia, Youtube documentaries and Design sources.
- Primary Findings - Sketches of proposed artworks based on our research from Secondary Findings.
- Produce the proposal after conducting proposal
- Primary Findings - Data collected by me and group members that obtained from On-site observation and Interviews/ Surveys
- Conducting research during creation of our artwork
- Final design production of artwork along with processes and team contributions
- Data collected through published and existing resources
Week 2
Class Summary
Visual Culture_School 'Badges'
As I was unable to follow the pace of the talk, thus I have studied the
article
written by Mr. Vinod.
From that article, I had learned that our public school emblems (and
government coat of arms) are based on medieval European heritage. Then the
word 'badge' is used when a school emblem is worn on the school uniform.
Heraldry
Heraldry
- Symbols of identification of distinguished persons or states
- Employed to distinguish individuals, armies, institutions, and corporations.
- Adorn banners, shields, or worn on armour
- In the past, armies to distinguish foe from friend during battle is by the heraldic devices (arms/ bearings) that adorned on the fully-knitted knight’s coat (worn on his body over his armour) of arms or his shield (escutcheon).
- The basic components of heraldic achievement are the shield, motto, mantle, helmet, crest, and supporters as shown in figure below:

- The term ‘charges’ are used to decorate shield, which can be simple geometric shapes known as ‘ordinaries’ that constitutes shapes like: cross, saltire, or chevron. Moreover, charges can also be in animal form or symbolic: plant, object, building or others devices.

- ‘Achievement’ or ‘achievement of arms’ is said to be one has to accomplish something for it to be recorded in his/ her achievement when armorial bearings are displayed in full (all the devices inherited and personal). 'Armigers' is referred to a person who has inherited or lawfully granted arms.
- The Rule of Tincture - usually stated as follows: "colour cannot be placed upon colour, nor metal upon metal".
Week 3
Public Holiday
We are require to finalise our ideas and based on the chosen visual
culture, create a PowerPoint slides that includes our research on the
selected culture and submit to the respective lecture. Upon approval, we
are require to prepare for the presentation in Week 4.
Week 4
Class Summary
Having presentation and consultation with Mr Asrizal and Miss Anis about
our proposal. Being informed to start our Project 2: Data
Collection.
Instructions
As a group, our first task is to determine the basic assumptions or
artefacts and products that are culturally driven for our artwork
project's topic. To do this, we are advised to refer to the breakdown or
expansion of the Design System to thoroughly study our chosen topic or
artefacts.
Once we have compiled our findings, we need to create a presentation deck that includes a 200-word rationale for our proposal, as well as a minimum of three sketches of the project artwork.

Submissions
- The depends on the critical thoughts in visual form.
Topic Selection Process:
1) Proposed Ideas
After brainstorming ideas for the theme assigned "Visualism - Visual Culture". We roughly did some research and documented the information and
listed the possibilities and obstacles of each ideas then sought
advise from Ms. Anis.

2) Research
Week 1 (13 Jan 2023)
Working in pairs, we further explored three different cultures that we
think will be more interesting. The shortlisted cultures are as shown
below:
i) Tea Culture - by Wai Kei
ii) Japanese Charms - by Chris and ME
iii) Graffiti Art - by Rui Ying and Xinyi
After dividing into small groups, I and Chris have discuss through
WhatsApp over the task assigned. Since I am not good in drawing,
thus we had come to an agreement where I will be putting more
efforts on doing the research works then Chris will work on the
sketches.
The research are separated into several parts and a list of breakdown
are made to allow readers to have clearer understanding.

Week 2 (17 Jan 2023)
Chosen Culture - Graffiti Arts
After discussion with Ms. Anis and among team members on the chosen
culture of Graffiti Arts, our Group Leader, Lim XinYi, has delegated new
individual tasks to each team member. The assigned tasks to me are as
follows:
- Research on famous graffiti artists and the values does these graffiti
artists has brought to the community.
- Upon approval, prepare PowerPoint Slides for Week 4 presentation.

Feedback
Week 1
Ms. Anis commented on our preliminary proposed ideas and she has given
her thoughts on each particular ideas such as Tea Pot + Tea Ceremony
would be a great combination as it brings out the Tea Culture.
Furthermore, Ms. Anis advised to start from the basic assumption of luck
in Japan to further expand our research on this topic and utilise the
design system to further breakdown graffiti and street art.
Week 2
Ms. Anis commented lack of research and members itself does not have the
same knowledge, direction and understanding on the culture proposed. She
advised not to over influenced by senior's research direction as the
theme assigned is different. Besides, Ms. Anis suggests to follow the
design process that Mr. Asrizal had taught us since the first
lesson.
Week 3
As tasks assigned are incomplete thus Mr. Asrizal could not give any feedback on our selected visual culture. The PowerPoint slides were empty and the Google document looks like copy and paste link from everywhere without any clear coherent plan of what is our proposal all about. Upon completion of the slides, Mr. Asrizal commented no issues for now.

Week 4
After presentation, Mr. Asrizal advices that we could utilise our research on the graffiti letter styles, then apply it to our sketches, while Ms Anis questioned us on the purpose of our sketches (product) and think of what makes people need to have it. Moreover, what message does our idea wanted to convey to the public.
